Wine Notes
Another wet and cool spring gave the Shake Ridge Syrah vines plenty of energy, but there was sufficient crop to keep the growth in balance. Asking a bit more work out of the vines insured balanced growth, which in turns develops mature flavors and tannins in the grapes.
The second season of bearing fruit is always tricky - too much and the vine suffers, too little crop and the vine runs wild. Since the vines are young, we erred on the side of vigor, but our trusty cover crops soaked up the extra moisture and nutrition and the result was strong, well-developed vines that handled their crop with grace and style.
After discovering the lovely fruit characteristics of the Shake Ridge Syrah in 2005, our winemaker, Ken Bernards, dared to toss 30% whole clusters into the fermenters in 2006. The stems gave intriguing nuances of spice and complexity, while the powerhouse fruit and texture we saw the first year insured beautiful balance.
TASTING NOTES
According to Ken, here’s what you can expect from the 2006 Syrah - “Blackberry preserves, currant, red licorice, crushed black pepper, vanilla”. What’s not to like?
