Wine Notes

One of California’s most acclaimed vineyards, Durell Vineyard is located in the southwestern hills of Sonoma Valley, straddling the Carneros, Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations. Durell’s cross-appellation location and cool, Region 2 climate distinguish it as one of the most sought-after sites for Pinot Noir. Because Durell is north of the Carneros district proper – and thus further removed from maritime influences of San Pablo Bay – it is not as chilly or fog-bound as many Carneros vineyards, but still enjoys an ideal, cool-climate environment for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard’s sloping hills, rocky clay loam soils and low-vigor vines intensify flavors and produce low yields – 3 tons per acre on average. Sand Hill Wines display great complexity and depth, a reflection of Durell Vineyard’s clonal diversity.

The fruit for this wine is hand-harvested from select blocks within the vineyard and transported to a small, gravity-flow, custom crush winery nearby in the town of Sonoma, where winemaker Don Van Staaveren begins the winemaking process with a thorough sorting of both clusters and berries to ensure only clean, mature fruit reaches the fermenters. The grapes are then 100% de-stemmed, resulting in 80% whole berries, which feed directly from the sorting table into small, open-top tanks. The fruit is cold-macerated for up to 5 days to extract color and flavor from the skins prior to fermentation. Most lots are inoculated with a Burgundian yeast, but up to 25% ferment with indigenous yeast. The cap is punched down manually, and when completely dry, the wine is basket-pressed and gravity-fed into tight-grained, medium-plus-toast French oak barrels, where it completes primary and malolactic fermentation.

TASTING NOTES

Van Staaveren believes Pinot Noir is “all about texture,” and this wine has a lovely one, with intense floral spice of dried herb and mushrooms and an exotic undertone of mint and Kirsch. Juicy, spicy and plummy on the palate with good concentration. The mouth-feel is full and rich, and really, really long.
